IRAN used yesterday’s Revolution Day festivities to send a warning to US President Donald Trump over his sabre-rattling towards Tehran.
In what has become a tradition during the annual rallies which celebrate the country’s 1979 revolution, Iranians chanted “death to America” and carried effigies of Mr Trump.
Printed US flags and portraits of current and former US presidents were pasted on the pavement for pedestrians to walk on in a symbolic act of disrespect to the US.
Leaflets with the US president’s face and the slogan “Thanks Mr Trump for showing the real face of America” paraphrased Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s words earlier this week.
The anger follows Mr Trump’s decision last week to put Tehran “on notice” over a recent medium-range ballistic missile test and slap sanctions on 13 individuals and a dozen companies.
In his speech in Tehran’s Azadi Square, President Hassan Rouhani called the new US government “a problem.
“All of them should know that they must talk to the Iranian nation with respect and dignity,” he said. “Our nation will strongly answer any threat. We will resist before enemies until the end.”
Mr Rouhani said that while Tehran did not seek to raise “tensions in the region and the world,” the Iranian people were “united before bullying and any threat.”
Other protesters held up signs in English which read: “Thanks to American people for supporting Muslims,” referring to the nationwide demonstrations across the US against Mr Trump’s racist “Muslim Ban.”
Iran’s communist Tudeh Party also pointed out the key role communists and other secular forces played in overthrowing the US-backed Shah, saying the ayatollahs who took power “betrayed” the revolution when they drove the party underground.
International Secretary Navid Shomali said: “Many of those who are in the streets of Tehran and other cities do not support the theocratic regime.
“They are there to express their demands for a better economy, governance and the forgotten ideals of the revolution.
“They are also sending a very clear signal and saying no to any military adventure or economic sanctions against Iran.”
