WESTMINSTER must stand up to US President Donald Trump and tell him he is wrong on UN funding cuts, climate change and refugees, shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry toldSenate House MPs today.

Speaking at the start of Labour’s opposition day debate in the Commons on refugees and human rights, she said he was “simply unfit to govern.”

She argued that Britain must not just “wring our hands about the suffering of the Rohingya or the Yemeni people or the Palestinian refugees” but to “take the global lead and to end that suffering.”

Saturday marked a year since Prime Minister Theresa May held hands with Mr Trump “just hours” before he signed the executive order banning Muslim refugees from the US, she pointed out.

“We have now reached the stage where Donald Trump can describe the entire continent of Africa, including 19 of our Commonwealth cousins, as, I quote, ‘shitholes’ and there is not a peep of protest from our government,” Ms Thornberry said.

Middle East Minister Alistair Burt admitted that “much of what she said is agreeable,” but he said that Ms Thornberry should visit the United Nations general assembly in September to see how Britain is regarded for its “commitment to development and human rights.”
