WASPI campaigners have joined SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn to call on MPs to back his state pension compensation Bill tomorrow.
The Westminster Labour government apologised in December to 1950s-born women found by the parliamentary and health services ombudsman to have been affected by Department of Work and Pension “maladministration” when pension age changes were accelerated.
But its decision to ignore the ombudsman’s recommendation of paying around £2,950 to each affected woman sparked a furious response from campaigners and MPs on both sides of the Commons.
Writing to all MPs ahead of a crunch vote on his attempt to overturn the decision tomorrow, Mr Flynn noted: “Keir Starmer, Angela Rayner, Rachel Reeves, Liz Kendall, Anas Sarwar and Ian Murray are among those who have previously pledged their support for financial compensation for Waspi women.
“Politicians who promise ‘change’ at the ballot box, only to break their promises in government, are eroding and destroying public trust.
“The Prime Minister was happy to be photographed, ahead of the election, pledging support in no uncertain terms — now he must honour that pledge.”
Lending support to his efforts, Waspi Scotland chairwoman Linda Carmichael urged all those affected to call on their MPs to support the Bill.
Waspi Glasgow co-ordinator Anne Potter added: “This is an opportunity for all MPs to demonstrate their disappointment at the UK government’s [decision not] to pay compensation.
“We feel we have been betrayed and are extremely disappointed — particularly with our new Labour MPs.”
