Sport in brief with Jamie J: January 19, 2024

MEN’S HOCKEY: Zach Wallace and Sam Ward both scored twice as Great Britain thumped China 6-0 on Thursday to maintain their 100 per cent record and set up a semi-final with New Zealand at the Olympic qualifying competition in Oman tomorrow. Germany will face Pakistan in the other semi with only the finalists and third-placed team guaranteed a spot at this year’s Paris Olympics.

MEN’S CRICKET: Josh Hazlewood took 5-35 as Australia romped to a 10-wicket victory over the West Indies on the third day of the first test in Adelaide. The Windies crumbled to 120 all out in their second innings today morning as Kirk McKenzie top-scored with just 26. Hazlewood ended with match figures of 9-79. The second and final test starts in Brisbane on Thursday.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Manchester make the long journey south to Colchester tomorrow afternoon to take on the Essex Rebels in the first semi-final of the Betty Codona Trophy. The Rebels knocked out last year’s runners-up Leicester in the last round while Manchester eased past Nottingham. Cup holders and WBBL league leaders London, who are unbeaten in all competitions this season, visit Sheffield for the second semi-final on Sunday.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Nine-time winners The New Saints take on Swansea City’s under-21s in Saturday evening’s Welsh League Cup final at Barry Town’s Jenner Park stadium. It’s the first time that Swansea’s development side have taken part in this competition after receiving a wildcard place and winning their first match 4-0 at Carmarthen, last July. Runaway Cymru Premier table-toppers The New Saints are on a 17-match winning league and cup run.
