PROTESTERS in Argentina continued their 24-hour “March of Resistance” yesterday against President Mauricio Macri’s vicious attacks on workers.
The march kicked off in the capital Buenos Aires on Thursday under the slogans “Solidarity and struggle or hunger and repression,” and “Cristina driving,” a slogan of supporters of former president Cristina Fernandez who want a return to her policies.
They also demanded the release from prison of labour protest leader and Tupac Amaru Neighbourhood Association president Milagro Sala.
Led by the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo group, the protest brought together various social movements “in the face of lies, hunger and setbacks,” days before the anniversary of Mr Macri’s election.
Demonstrators camped out in the Plaza de Mayo in front of the Casa Rosada presidential palace.
Mr Macri’s government has dismantled workers’ rights and poverty relief schemes created under Ms Fernandez and her late husband, former president Nestor Kirchner.
It has also laid off tens of thousands of public and private workers in a campaign the opposition has denounced as ideologically motived.
“Today, in the face of the day-to-day persecution in our country, the lack of work and constant subversion of rights, it is necessary to redouble our efforts to show that the struggle continues,” the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo said.
Mothers president Hebe de Bonafini said the protest marked a return to picketing the palace for the group, which had “felt there was no longer an enemy in the Casa Rosada.”
She declared: “We will come out into the street so that every Argentinian may have work, that no child will go hungry.”
