US PRESIDENT Donald Trump said yesterday he would cooperate with Russia in its war on Isis in Syria and elsewhere.
The death cult launched counter-attacks on US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces guerillas after they seized the Tabqa hydroelectric dam over the Euphrates river intact late on Wednesday.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met his US counterpart Rex Tillerson and President Donald Trump on Wednesday.
Mr Trump “raised the possibility of broader co-operation on resolving conflicts in the Middle East and elsewhere,” the White House said.
At a Russian embassy press conference following the meeting, Mr Lavrov was more specific.
“We are ready for this cooperation and today have discussed in detail the steps and mechanisms which we can manage together,” he said.
“We have thoroughly discussed the Syrian issue, particularly the ideas related to setting up de-escalation zones.
“We share an understanding that this should become a common step aimed at putting an end to violence across Syria.”
The safe zones plan was agreed at talks in Kazakhstan’s capital Astana last week between Russian, Iran and Turkey, but has yet to receive US backing.
The Russian minister voiced praise for Mr Trump, just a month after he launched a massive cruise missile attack on the Syrian air force.
That attack was officially a response to a reported chemical weapons assault on Khan Sheikhoun, which the US sys was a false-flag operation but the US blames on Damascus.
“Our dialogue is not as politicised as it used to be during Obama’s presidency,” Mr Lavrov said.
However the White House said Mr Trump made clear the need for Russia to “rein in” Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government, along with Iran and its “proxies.”
And critics questioned the timing of the meeting following Mr Trump’s sacking earlier this week of FBI chief James Comey, who was leading an investigation into Russia’s alleged interference in the election last year.
