Top England cricketers snubbed in Indian Premier League player auction

JOE ROOT was joined by Eoin Morgan and Alex Hales in being snubbed by Indian Premier League (IPL) teams as England cricketers experienced mixed fortunes in the player auction.

Root recently decided to sit out the Twenty20 Tri-Series against Australia and New Zealand, giving himself the chance to appear in the IPL. He said the money was a draw, along with improving his white-ball skills.

But Root, man of the series as England beat Australia 4-1 in their run of one-day internationals this month, was not bought this weekend.

Fast bowler Mark Wood landed a deal with Chennai Super Kings.

All-rounder Ben Stokes was sold for almost £1.4 million yesterday despite his impending February 13 court appearance for affray.

He was snapped up by Rajasthan Royals, but for less than the £1.7m paid last year by Rising Pune Supergiant.

The IPL had assured franchises they would be able to replace Stokes if he was ruled out for the whole competition.
