WELSH independence campaigners took their demands to Westminster today as YesCymru directors Rob Hughes and Sam Murphy delivered a letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The letter called on the Labour government to transfer control of the Crown Estate’s assets and revenues in Wales to the people of Wales.
YesCymru has already secured support from all 22 local authorities in Wales, the Senedd, and 75 per cent of the Welsh public, the group said.
In the letter, the campaigners argued that Westminster’s refusal to act is fuelling support for independence.
They highlighted a surge in backing for an independent Wales — from about 5 per cent before the 2014 Scottish referendum to 41 per cent in a poll conducted in April.
Mr Hughes said: “Wales has been overlooked and undervalued for far too long.
“All we’re asking for is fairness, and when that’s denied, more and more people see independence as the only way forward.”
The Crown Estate in Wales is worth over £850 million and generates significant income from land and seabeds. Profits currently go to the British Treasury.
Campaigners argue that transferring control to Wales — as in Scotland — would ensure wealth from natural resources is reinvested in its communities.
