Plaid Cymru marks one year to Senedd election

WELSH nationalists today celebrate one year to go to the Senedd election as they surged into a poll lead for the first time.

Plaid Cymru’s leader Rhun ap Iorwerth, in a major speech marking one year to the Senedd election in 2026, will today claim his party is the only credible pro-Wales government on offer.

The Welsh nationalist leader was given a boost by the latest ITV Wales/Cardiff University poll carried out by YouGov, where Plaid is ahead in the polls for the first time on 30 per cent.

Welsh Labour has slumped to third on 18 per cent, behind Reform UK on 25 per cent.

The 2026 Senedd election offers a “golden opportunity to elect a pro-Wales government,” Plaid Cymru’s leader said.

“I invite everyone who believes in Wales and its possibilities to seize the golden opportunity and vote for Plaid Cymru next year as the only credible pro-Wales government,” Mr ap Iorwerth said.

“Time and again over the last few months, the First Minister Eluned Morgan and her Labour government have put party before country.

“They have failed to stand up to [Prime Minister Sir] Keir Starmer and given up on demanding fairness for Wales.

“In stark contrast, a Plaid Cymru government would demand a better deal for Wales at every turn so we can give you the public services you deserve.

“Health, wealth and Wales will be the focus of my government — one that will prioritise giving people the care they need where and when they need it, and tackle the ongoing cost-of-living challenges affecting so many.”
