CYCLING: Denmark’s Mattias Skjelmose held off world champion Tadej Pogacar and Olympic gold medallist Remco Evenepoel in a three way sprint to claim Sunday’s Amstel Gold one-day race. Tom Pidcock was the highest placed Briton, 34 seconds behind in ninth. Dutch racer Mischa Bredewold won the women’s race finishing seven seconds ahead of compatriots Ellen van Dijk and Puck Pieterse with Britain’s Anna Henderson in eighth.
MEN’S ICE HOCKEY: Mitchell Fossier scored in the second period of over-time as Nottingham Panthers recovered from giving up a three-goal lead to beat Cardiff 5-4 on their own ice and claim the Elite League play-offs title on Sunday evening. Regular season champions Belfast, who lost out 5-0 to Cardiff in Saturday’s semi final, held off defending champions Sheffield Steelers 8-7 in the third place match.
