Digital images are increasingly ubiquitous, but this exhibition sets out to demonstrate that the physical power of drawing still makes a potent impact in the digital age. It brings together a dynamic selection of recent works by 14 international artists who are committed to the materiality of paper and pencil, showcasing a remarkable attention to detail and skill.

In an age of mass media, where the rapid proliferation of images leaves many on the verge of digital exhaustion, A Slice Through the World explores the power of traditional drawing to make us slow down and reconsider how we look at the world. On show are works by ruby onyinyechi amanze (pictured), Nidhal Chamekh, Milano Chow, Kate Davis, Karl Haendel, David Haines, Ian Kiaer, Ciprian Muresan, David Musgrave, Wura-Natasha Ogunji, Kathy Prendergast, Massinissa Selmani, Lucy Skaer and Barbara Walker.

A formidable character with a political purpose, Lange focused her lens on human suffering and hardship to critique issues of injustice, inequality, migration and displacement. Recommended.

In August 1968, Philip Differ walked through the gates of St Modan’s High School for the first time armed with a briefcase, a pen and the unshakeable belief that he was destined to usurp the school’s most famous ex-pupil, Leeds United and Scotland captain Billy Bremner.

This is a one-off lunch-time performance and it's also on at the New Town Theatre at the Edinburgh Festival from August 1.

Now in its second quarter-century, the Leigh Folk Festival continues on its singular path of challenging the boundaries of folk music with a community-based event that draws thousands to the "Thames Delta."

Stand-outs in this year's programme are The Emily Askew Band, Alasdair Roberts, Amble Skuse and David McGuinness, whle other highlights are the centrepiece procession by the Dagenham Girl Pipers, dance displays — morris, clog, rapper, salsa, disco, belly-dancing — as well as poets, mummers, story-tellers, comedians and a belting line-up of local folk musicians. Most events are free.
