THERE has been widespread condemnation since Iranian authorities reported Saturday’s execution of two men convicted of killing a paramilitary volunteer during a demonstration.
The men, Mohammad Mehdi Karami and Mohammad Hosseini, had been convicted of killing Ruhollah Ajamian, a member of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s volunteer Basij force, in Karaj, near Tehran, on November 3.
The executions are the fourth known to have taken place since nationwide demonstrations began in September following the death of Mahsa Amini at the hands of Iran’s morality police after the young Kurdish woman had allegedly gone against the country’s strict dress laws for women.
The Committee for the Defence of Iranian People’s Rights (Codir) welcomes demonstrations across Iran, which have put pressure upon the theocratic dictatorship, but warns against intervention by the United States to force Iran in a particular direction
