US PRESIDENT Joe Biden has gone back on an election vow that “not one more foot” of a border wall with Mexico would be built if he beat former president Donald Trump, waiving 26 federal laws to allow Texas to extend its wall.
It is the first time his government has used executive powers to waive laws, though Mr Trump frequently did so. The high walls violate a number of environmental protections as they cut through the habitats of endangered species and are known to kill wildlife.
The Clean Air Act, Safe Drinking Water Act and Endangered Species Act are among the laws waived.
Calls have been made for the return to Venezuela of a two-year-old girl currently being held in the US, after being separated from her family by immigration officials, reports SUSAN GREY
