LONG Covid has left more than 70,000 people in Scotland unable to work without the support they need, a charity has warned.
In a recent survey, the Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland (CHSS) found around 40 per cent could not work due to symptoms such as chest and joint pain, heart palpitations and depression, which could equate to as many as 72,000 if mirrored in Scotland’s estimated 180,000 Long Covid population.
The survey also revealed that a staggering 72 per cent of sufferers could not access any support with the condition.
Jane-Claire Judson, the charity’s chief executive, said: “The Scottish government cannot leave people with long Covid to face unemployment in an economic crisis.
“We urgently need the Scottish government to review the financial support available and ensure that people can access it.
“People with Long Covid can’t wait any longer.
“They are struggling financially and support from the NHS is patchy at best.”
SNP public health minister Jenni Minto responded: “We take long Covid very seriously and recognise the impact it can have on those most severely affected.
“Ensuring that people access the social security benefits they are entitled to is a priority.”
