A letter from your sports editor on International Women's Day
Arsenal's Stina Blackstenius (second right) celebrates scoring their side's fourth goal of the game with team-mates during the FA Women's Continental Tyres League Cup semi-final match at Borehamwood, March 6, 2024

INTERNATIONAL Women’s Day marks a celebration of women’s achievements and a call for gender equality. In the realm of sports, it’s a moment to acknowledge the remarkable strides made by female athletes and advocates. The emergence of women’s sports has been a triumph of determination, challenging stereotypes and breaking barriers.

As one of the only female sports editors at a national newspaper in Britain, I take pride in amplifying the voices and stories of female athletes. However, there’s still a lot of ground to cover. In the coming year, my focus is twofold: continuing to expand coverage beyond just football and nurturing more female talent in sports journalism.

The Morning Star was a pioneering force in providing a platform for women’s sports long before other publications. I aim to continue building on these foundations, and will strive to diversify our coverage, shedding light on sports where women excel but often receive less attention. From rugby to netball, athletics to gymnastics, there’s a wealth of remarkable performances waiting to be showcased. By broadening our scope, we honour the achievements of female athletes across disciplines and inspire future generations.

My highlights of the past year in sport have been Coco Gauff’s US Open win, watching the Women’s World Cup with my friends and attending the sell-out Women’s North London derby at Ashburton Grove earlier this month. I urge you to get involved this year as together, we can continue to champion women in sports, both on and off the field, and pave the way for a more equitable future.
