TAXI drivers are set to rally in Glasgow to deliver a petition demanding taht council chiefs keep the cap on private hire cabs in the city.

Glasgow City Council recently concluded a consultation on lifting the limit from its present 3,450, amid pressure for the change from companies such as Uber.

But taxi drivers argue it will create a “race to the bottom,” reducing vehicle standards, increasing pollution and undermining taxis’ vital transport role for those with mobility problems.

Unite drivers will rally now tomorrow at 12.30pm at Cochrane Street outside the city chambers to deliver a 500-strong petition to demand the council “Keep the Cap.”

Unite industrial officer Andy Brown said: “There is no shred of evidence to support Glasgow City Council lifting the current cap on private hire vehicles. 

“The only people to benefit from any cap being lifted is multinational firms such as Uber, whose exclusive motive is profit.”

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said the cap was “about protecting a fair, safe, and accessible transport system,” adding: “The drivers will have their union’s full support in the fight to keep the cap.”
