Failure to strip Mandelson of peerage would be a public betrayal, SNP warns

THE SNP has called on the Prime Minister to strip Peter Mandelson of his peerage, warning that failing to do so would be a “betrayal of the public.”

SNP MP Seamus Logan demanded Andy Burnham take urgent action to remove the title from the disgraced peer when Parliament returns in September.

Lord Mandelson is being investigated by British police and EU anti-fraud officers on suspicion of offences committed in public office, including the passing of privileged information to the late US paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.

The Labour grandee was sacked as ambassador to the United States in September 2025 after leaked emails showed that he had sent supportive messages to Epstein even as the latter faced jail for sex offences.

The government has previously said it would introduce legislation to remove Lord Mandelson’s title; Sir Keir Starmer’s chief secretary Darren Jones told the Commons in February that this would happen “very, very shortly” and the proposal also featured in May’s King’s Speech, setting out the programme for government.

But the SNP argues that no such legislation has been forthcoming and has called on the new prime minister to act when Parliament returns from summer recess next month.

Mr Logan said: “If Burnham fails to strip Mandelson of his honours it will be a betrayal of the public and a betrayal of the brave victims of Jeffrey Epstein who have been so badly failed by the Labour Party.”

The government is expected to provide an update soon on plans to bring forward legislation to remove peerages from disgraced peers, announced in the King’s Speech.
