SPAIN: An accident at a mine in Spain’s northern Asturias region killed at least five people this morning and injured another four, according to the region’s emergency services authority.

The injured were taken to hospitals to be treated, two in helicopters and the other two by ambulance. Another two workers involved in the mine accident were unharmed, authorities said.

PAKISTAN: Pakistani authorities say they plan to expel 3 million Afghans from the country this year, as a deadline for them to voluntarily leave the capital and surrounding areas expired today.

It is the latest phase of a nationwide crackdown launched in October 2023 to expel foreigners living in Pakistan illegally, mostly Afghans. Arrests and deportations were due to begin on April 1 but were pushed back to April 10 because of the Eid al-Fitr holidays.

SUDAN: The leader of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group, General Mohamed Hamdane Daglo, admitted on Sunday that his troops have been forced out of the capital Khartoum by the Sudanese army after two years of fighting.

General Daglo said: “We will return. We will return stronger, more powerful, and victorious.”

CHINA: Over 60 experts from China and Russia joined a two-day conference in Shanghai today hosted by the Valdai International Discussion Club and the Centre for Russian Studies at East China Normal University.

The conference features four thematic sessions, namely “Russia and China: strategic partnership in a multipolar world,” “Global and regional challenges for Eurasia,” “Promising areas of bilateral co-operation: large-scale projects in Eurasia, artificial intelligence, and new payment mechanisms,” and “The future of international institutions and international law.”
