PAKISTAN: Pakistani security forces raided a militant hideout in the restive north-west near the Afghan border, killing nine militants, the military said today.

The military said in a statement that a militant Shireen was among those insurgents killed in Dera Ismail Khan, a city in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

All the militants who were killed were the “Khwarij,” a phrase the government uses for Pakistani Taliban, and Shireen was behind last month’s killing of an army Captain Hasnain Akhtar in a shootout in the region, the military said.

CONGO: The death toll from flooding that cut access to over half of the Congolese capital of Kinshasa reached 33 as authorities raced today to evacuate and support hundreds of families trapped in their homes.

Ten more people were confirmed dead as of Sunday evening, in addition to the 23 people killed the day before, Congolese Interior Minister Jacquemin Shabani said on state television late Sunday.

Heavy rains began last week, causing the key Ndjili River to overflow on Friday and submerge hundreds of buildings.

MYANMAR: Fighting was reported in Myanmar today, despite the country’s military and rebels having announced a temporary ceasefire after a devastating earthquake hit.

The United Nations Human Rights office accused the military of carrying out at least 14 attacks since announcing the truce.

The military said they responded to attacks carried out by accused rebel groups.
