Workplace training fund the Tories axed in England is helping tens of thousands in Wales

A WORKPLACE training scheme, axed by the Conservative government in England, is continuing to help tens of thousands of workers improve their workplace skills in Wales.

Wales Union Learning Fund (WULF), which marks its 25th anniversary on Thursday, is funded by the Welsh government and is a partnership between employers and Wales TUC.

Public service union Unison Cymru is one of the unions involved in the training scheme.

Unison Cymru/Wales regional secretary Jess Turner said: “WULF plays a vital role in the development of workers across Wales and Unison has always been at the heart of this.”

In England in 2021, the Tory government axed its £12 million funding for Union Learn — despite its success in helping 200,000 workers a year improve their skills.

The TUC said every £1 spent on the fund helped workers earn £7.60 more an hour, while employers benefited from £4.70 an hour in improved productivity.
