
BRAZIL: A majority of Brazil’s Supreme Court today voted for far-right former president Jair Bolsonaro to stand trial for his alleged role in conspiring to overthrow the country’s government after he lost the 2022 election to Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
HAITI: A Kenyan policeman deployed on the island has gone missing after violent gangs attacked a group of officers on a rescue mission, a UN-backed multinational military force said today.
The Kenyan officers were on their way on Tuesday to rescue Haitian police stuck in a ditch “suspected to have been deliberately dug by gangs,” according to the mission’s statement, adding that “specialised teams have been deployed” to search for the missing officer.
Local media outlets in Haiti reported that the officer had been killed and videos of a lifeless man clothed in Kenyan uniform were shared on social media.
RUSSIA: Authorities convicted 23 captured Ukrainians on terrorism charges stemming from the fighting in Ukraine today in a trial that Kiev has denounced as a sham and a violation of international law.
All had been charged with staging a violent coup d’etat and organising the activities of a terrorist organisation. Some faced an additional charge of training to carry out terrorist activities.
They were given sentences ranging from 13 to 23 years in prison.
NIGER: Military leader Abdourahamane Tchiani was sworn in as president during a ceremony in the capital Niamey today for a five-year transition period, under a new charter that replaces the West African nation’s constitution.
The transition period begins on Wednesday, according to the government’s secretary-general Mahamane Roufai.
