Iran announces execution of prisoner arrested during Mahsa Amini protests
In this photo taken by an individual not employed by the Associated Press and obtained by the AP outside Iran, Iranians protests the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini after she was detained by the morality police, in Tehran, Oct. 1, 2022.

IRANIAN authorities announced on Thursday that they executed a prisoner convicted for a crime allegedly committed during the country’s nationwide protests.

This is the first such death penalty carried out by Tehran.

The execution of Mohsen Shekari comes as other detainees also face the possibility of the death penalty for their involvement in the protests, which began in mid-September, first as an outcry against Iran’s morality police.
