Sport in brief with Jamie J: August 25, 2024

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Table-topping Eastleigh put the National League’s only 100 per cent record on the line tomorrow afternoon when they face unbeaten Sutton while second-placed Gateshead are at Oldham. Basement-dwellers Ebbsfleet will be looking for their first points of the season when they visit Braintree. Solihull Moors, who lost on penalties to Bromley in last season’s promotion play-off final, travel to Halifax Town.

SPEEDWAY: Defending champions Sheffield will be without Dan Gilkes for both legs of their bank holiday Premiership double-header against Belle Vue. The 22-year-old has been struggling with an eye problem that is linked to an inflammation of the spine that he suffered back in 2021. Tomorrow evening’s other Premiership fixture sees bottom club Birmingham host an out-of-form Ipswich team that has lost its last four matches.

MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: Melbourne thumped the Dolphins 48-6 to move six points clear in the NRL after champions Penrith slumped to a 22-18 loss at Canberra. Bottom club Wests beat Manly 34-26, Canterbury won 34-18 at the NZ Warriors, Brisbane edged out Parramatta 30-24 and Newcastle eased to a 36-16 win in South Sydney. On Sunday the Roosters beat Gold Coast 48-22 to move second and Cronulla cruised past St George Illawarra 38-10.

WOMEN’S CRICKET: The 50-over Rachel Heyhoe Flint Trophy resumes tomorrow after a six-week break with league leaders and reigning champions Southern Vipers taking on last year’s runners-up The Blaze in Arundel. Second-placed Northern Diamonds, captained by competition top-scorer Hollie Armitage, are at the Sunrisers, South East Stars play Lancashire Thunder and Western Storm face the Central Sparks in a bottom-of-the-table clash at Taunton.
