MEN’S BASKETBALL: Cheshire Phoenix held off a 20-point comeback from Bristol to squeeze out a 91-90 win in the first leg of their three game British Basketball League quarter-final play-off on Sunday evening. In the other last eight ties Leicester left it late to edge Sheffield 84-81, Jordan Johnson hit 31 points as Newcastle gained a surprise 97-78 victory at Caledonia and league champions London eased past Surrey 80-65.
NETBALL: Manchester Thunder improved their points difference lead at the top of the Super League after they brushed aside Surrey 73-48 and second-placed Loughborough won 64-56 at Leeds on Sunday evening. Bethan Goodwin hit 39 goals as bottom of the table Strathclyde earned their first point of the season with a 54-54 draw in Cardiff, third-placed London Pulse won 72-50 at the Severn Stars and Saracens beat Team Bath 53-44.
MEN’S FOOTBALL: Bromley will face Solihull Moors at Wembley next Sunday for a place in the Football League after goals from Myles Weston and a strike from Jude Arthurs helped them come from behind to beat Altrincham 3-1. Solihull earned an emphatic 4-0 win at Barnet, who had finished as runners-up in the league, 10 points ahead of the Moors. Neither club have previously played in the Football League.
WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: Melchie Dormanay scored again as Lyon, the most successful team in Champions League history with eight titles, beat Paris St Germain 2-1 on Sunday for a 5-3 aggregate win that sealed their place in the final against holders Barcelona. The Catalans had seen off Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge, 2-1 on aggregate, to make it through to this year’s showpiece in Bilbao at the end of May.
