RAIL union RMT blasted plans by the Elizabeth Line today to close every ticket office by August 2027 as “a betrayal of station staff and passengers,” vowing to take sustained industrial action in response.
The service withdrawal mirrors a failed attempt by the previous government to shut down offices across the rail network, which was scrapped after a wave of opposition.
Elizabeth Line services are run by GTS Rail Operations under a concession from Transport for London (TfL).
RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey said: “Against the backdrop of industrial relations chaos across TfL, this reckless move is like pouring petrol on the fire.
“These offices are vital for thousands of passengers, especially disabled and vulnerable people who depend on face-to-face services.
“The public’s views were made crystal clear in the railway ticket office consultation, yet TfL is pressing ahead with a mass campaign of closures that repeats the Tories’ madcap, failed plans.”
He urged London Mayor Sadiq Khan and TfL to intervene and prevent the closures.
A TfL spokesperson said: “There are no plans to close ticket offices.”
