Workers to ballot for strike over plans to cut ‘safety-critical’ roles from Isle of Wight ferries
The Wightlink Hybrid energy car ferry, Victoria of Wight, makes her way across the Solent into Portsmouth harbour, October 2018

FERRY workers will ballot for strike action over plans to cut safety-critical roles by cross-Solent ferry operator Wightlink, RMT union warned today.

The “efficiency” proposals will see Deck Officer and Port Operator grades cut, the closure of overnight onboard retail and reduced crewing levels across vessels, the maritime union said.

RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey said: “Cutting safety-critical roles and crewing ferries at bare minimum levels in one of the busiest stretches of water is a terrible idea for passengers and for RMT members alike.

“Wightlink workers have given years of service keeping the Solent moving and deserve better than threats to their jobs and conditions.

“Unless Wightlink management withdraws these proposals and gives guarantees to maintain the highest standards of safety and decent secure jobs, we will take action to defend our members and the communities they serve.”

Balloting will start next Wednesday. Wightlink was contacted for comment.
