Birmingham just the tip of council cash crisis, Starmer warns

LABOUR leader Sir Keir Starmer said today that there are versions of the financial crisis at Birmingham City Council “across the country” as he pledged to look at a settlement for local authorities.

The Labour-led council declared itself effectively bankrupt on Tuesday when it issued a section 114 notice.

It means that all new spending will stop immediately, with exceptions for the protection of vulnerable people and statutory services.
