TRADE unionists have declared a “historic win” after a luxury online retailer has accepted union recognition for hundreds of its workers.
Distribution staff working for the prominent fashion stockist Net-A-Porter at the company’s south London warehouse will now be formally represented in their workplace by the GMB.
After a secret ballot, which took place earlier in the year, staff voted to seek a formal recognition agreement.
After extensive discussions with the central arbitration committee, they have now gained this recognition.
The employer and the GMB have both now agreed to enter negotiations to agree terms and conditions.
GMB national officer Nadine Houghton said: “Net-A-Porter workers should be proud of the courageous move they have taken to stand up and be counted.
“We’re showing how in new, emerging, digital economies unions are as relevant now as they have ever been.
“This young, dynamic workforce voted overwhelmingly to bring GMB in — they know a trade union is not a luxury but a vital tool in winning fairness and dignity at work.”
