STUC leader hits out at bullying by energy firm

SCOTLAND’S top trade unionist has accused British Gas of bullying striking workers, reiterating that the company must face consequences.

Roz Foyer, general secretary of the STUC, made her declaration following the decision to sack hundreds of staff by bosses on Wednesday.

Workers have been on strike throughout the year, refusing to sign “fire & rehire” contracts attacking pay and conditions.

Ms Foyer branded the actions of the company an attack on the rights of workers and a major breach of Scotland’s Fair Work principles.

She said: “The action of these workers will inspire the whole trade union movement to continue to campaign for an end to this outrageous practice.”

“We are calling on the Scottish government and all public bodies signed up the Fair Work principles to review their current contracts with Scottish Gas and henceforth not to do business with the company.

“Big business needs to know that it cannot act with impunity when it attacks workers.”
