News in brief: Scotland - 15th April, 2021
The Scottish Parliament in Holyrood, Edinburgh

ONSHORE WIND: The Scottish Greens have laid out plans for a new deal for Scotland’s wind energy supply.

The party’s manifesto includes pledges to replace existing turbines with newer, more powerful models and to double the size of the industry, which it says will help to create thousands of jobs.

Co-leader Patrick Harvie said: “Scotland can be a leader in renewable energy, but only if we invest in it. Our future depends on it.”

TRANSPORT: The next Scottish government should introduce on-demand bus services to encourage people out of their cars after the pandemic, a transport charity said today.

Collaborative Mobility UK set out its manifesto ahead of the May 6 elections, including plans for a mobility hub at every major NHS site.

Scotland director Lorna Finlayson said: “We want to see imagination and a commitment to shared transport at the very heart of parties’ plans.”

DAVIDSON: Former Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson has said that Westminster needs an elected second chamber – despite having accepting a peerage herself.

It was revealed last year that the ex-MSP will take up the position next month, but she has now claimed that she would vote for an overhaul of the system.

Speaking to the Scotsman, Ms Davidson added: “I don't think the chamber that exists should only be filled with people who live inside the M25 corridor.”
