Welsh anti-fascists celebrate council's National Front rally ban in Swansea
Unite Against Fascism praises 'precedent-setting' council leader as racist nazis are denied city-centre rally

Welsh anti-fascist activists celebrated a victory yesterday when a National Front “white pride” demonstration was cancelled.

The far-right group planned to gather in Swansea today in a repeat of a tiny rally they held in the city last year.

But they abandoned their plans after Swansea Council refused to allocate them a site near the city centre.

Leader David Phillips cleverly offered only two sites on the outskirts of the city, which were both refused.

A Unite Against Fascism Wales statement said he had “set a precedent” for councils across Britain.

“The lesson is — determined opposition and unity wins,” it added.

The group said South Wales Police have promised that nazis will be dispersed or arrested if they turn up in Swansea city centre this afternoon.

Many of the hundreds of activists who planned to stage a counter demonstration are now travelling to Cardiff to join the day of action against the bedroom tax.
