MEN’S FOOTBALL: The New Saints won the Welsh League Cup for a 10th time after cruising to a 5-1 win over Swansea’s Under 21s. Goals from Ryan Brobbel and Josh Pask put them 2-0 up at half time, Brad Young added a third soon after the break before Ben Lloyd pulled one back for the Swans. Adrian Cieslewicz’s netted twice late on to seal the victory and extended their unbeaten run to 33 matches.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY: Britain secured their place at this summer’s Olympics after strikes from Sarah Jones and Katie Robertson secured a 2-1 victory over Ireland in Saturday’s third place match at the qualifying tournament in Valencia. Belgium, who are currently ranked as the world’s second best team, and Spain will join the British at the Olympics after the Belgians came from behind to beat the Spanish 2-1 in the final.
WOMEN’S BOXING: Natasha Jonas made a successful first defence of her IBF welterweight belt in Liverpool late on Saturday night after edging a split decision over the US’s former super-featherweight world champion Mikaela Meyer. The judges scored the contest 96-94, 96-95 and 93-97 in favour of 39-year-old Jonas who improved her record to 15 wins and two losses while Meyer suffered only her second defeat in 21 bouts.
