MEN’S BOXING: Ryan Garcia stopped Conor Benn in the second round to retain his WBC welterweight title in Las Vegas early this morning.

Benn, who previously fought at middleweight, reportedly slimmed down by almost 13 kilograms for the fight and was comfortably outclassed by the champion before being knocked down in round two.

Californian-born Garcia improved his career record to 26 wins and two losses.

HORSE RACING: Saffie Osborne became the first woman to ride a British Classic winner after steering home Highwayman in Saturday’s St Leger at Doncaster.

The 11/1 shot hit the front over a quarter of a mile out and came home two and a half lengths ahead of Enceladus.

The top two were both trained by Joseph O’Brien at Carriganog in County Kilkenny. Race favourite Christmas Day, who won this year’s Derby, trailed home ninth.

MEN’S RUGBY UNION: South Africa completed a 3-1 series victory over New Zealand after seeing off the All Blacks 43-28 in front of a 68,000-strong crowd in Baltimore on Saturday night.

The back-to-back World Champions led by three points at half-time, but eased clear in the second half with their forward pack once again asserting dominance over the Kiwis.

Springbok scrum-half Morne van den Berg picked up the player of the match award.

SPEEDWAY: Robert Lambert won the rain-curtailed penultimate leg of this year’s World Championship in Vojens, Denmark on Saturday evening to move one point clear of defending champion Bartosz Zmarzlik.

Last year’s runner-up Brady Kurtz is just two points further back in third. The Norwich-born rider has finished in the top two at the last five legs.

The championship decider takes place in a fortnight at Lambert’s home track of Torun in Poland.
