UNITED STATES: The sole pipeline that supplies water for millions of visitors to the US state of Arizona’s Grand Canyon was badly damaged by weekend flash flooding that killed at least two people.

“We anticipate miles of the pipeline being destroyed,” Grand Canyon deputy superintendent Brian Drapeaux said on Monday.

The incident upends a long construction project to upgrade the line laid over terrain so rugged that helicopters are often required to make basic fixes.

CYPRUS: A submersible vessel joined the search yesterday for 20 people missing for two days following a ferry disaster off the coast of Cyprus.

Eight people died when the passenger ferry Filo Jet, which was carrying 267 passengers and crew, capsized and sank after leaving Kyrenia in northern Cyprus, for Tasucu, Turkey, on Sunday afternoon.

THE HAGUE: A court of arbitration in The Hague has ruled that India cannot unilaterally suspend the Indus Waters Treaty.

In a unanimous decision issued on Monday, the five-member court found that the treaty “remains fully in force” and that India “must observe its obligations” under it, including those governing the design and operation of hydropower projects on rivers that flow into Pakistan.

LUXEMBOURG: Luxembourg is not renewing its authorisation for the issue of Israel Bonds since it expired on Monday, leaving Israel with an uncertain future over its ability to borrow via investors in European markets.

Luxembourg’s finance minister Gilles Roth said the financial regulator, the Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier (CSSF), had decided not to renew approval for the bond prospectus beyond its August 31 expiry date.
