INDIA: The flood crisis in India’s north-eastern Assam state remained critical today, with the death toll reaching 100 after two more people died overnight, officials said.

Several rivers remain above danger levels, raising the risk of fresh flooding in vulnerable areas, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority said. Days of heavy monsoon rain has caused rivers, including the Brahmaputra, to overflow.

PAKISTAN: Voters went to the polls today in the final phase of elections for the legislative assembly in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, following weeks of violent protests and clashes with security forces that overshadowed campaigning in the disputed Himalayan region, officials said.

Pakistan’s ruling Pakistan Muslim League-N party has already secured a majority and is expected to form the regional government for the first time in a decade after winning 24 of the 34 seats decided in the first two phases of voting.

TURKEY: Turkey’s parliament was set to open debate today on a draft Bill that would introduce a conditional amnesty for thousands of Kurdish militants, offering them a pardon-like mechanism in a bid to advance the government’s peace initiative with their insurgent group.

Last year, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party ended its armed campaign against the Turkish state, disarming and then disbanding as part of the peace effort.

RUSSIA: At least 13 people were killed by a Ukrainian drone strike on the Russian republic of Tatarstan, officials said today.

One child was among the victims with another 75 people injured in one of the deadliest single attacks on Russia since Moscow’s invasion.

The drones struck Nizhnekamsk, more than 680 miles inside Russia.
