CEUTA: The Spanish government has apologised to the people of Ceuta for the migrant crisis that has affected the city for weeks and it has unveiled plans to overhaul the country’s immigration laws.

“I want to apologise to all those who may have felt, or who even still feel, abandoned or not sufficiently cared for,” Defence Minister Margarita Robles told a parliamentary committee.

At least 72,000 migrants crossed from Morocco into Ceuta, a Spanish exclave in North Africa on July 30 and 31.

 

OCCUPIED WEST BANK: A far-right member of the Israeli parliament has badly damaged a Palestinian memorial with a sledgehammer in the occupied West Bank while under military escort.

Video footage showed Zvi Sukkot, a member of the far-right Religious Zionism party, and several others striking the stone memorial in the Palestinian village of Madama.

 

ROHINGYA: Tens of thousands of Rohingya refugees from Myanmar living in dozens of camps in Bangladesh held a rally on Tuesday to demand their safe return to their home state, nine years after they fled a government crackdown.

The demonstrators urged the international community to ensure security in Rakhine state as they marked the “Ninth Anniversary of Rohingya Genocide Day.”

 

INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT: The president of the International Criminal Court said yesterday there is no reason she has to face United States sanctions, saying that she is asking Japan’s government to work with Washington to avoid further escalating tensions.

Last week Tomoko Akane, a Japanese national, became the latest court member to be hit with sanctions that freeze any assets it has in US jurisdictions.
