CLAIMS that fraudster Peter Murrell did not control Yes Scotland funds have been dismissed as “weasel words” by campaigners demanding police investigation.

In a statement issued on behalf of former Yes Scotland supremo Blair Jenkins on Tuesday, lawyer Aamer Anwar branded allegations that £1.5 million was “missing” from its accounts and claims that then SNP chief executive Peter Murrell had control over its books as “grossly defamatory.”

However, after meeting police officers on Tuesday morning to urge an investigation, Scottish independence campaigners David Henry and Sean Clerkin rejected Mr Anwar’s claims.

“That’s weasel words,” said Mr Henry.

“Access doesn’t mean he wasn’t in control or acting as a shadow director, right?”

Mr Henry then claimed former SNP lawyer Scott Martin was “in charge of the Yes Scotland bank account,” with Mr Clerkin adding: “And who was his boss? His boss was Peter Murrell.”

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Information has been received and it is being assessed.”

An SNP spokesperson said: “Yes Scotland Ltd is and was an entirely separate entity to the SNP. 

“Throughout the referendum campaign Yes Scotland was run by an independent board of directors.”
