JEWISH groups have condemned the latest anti-semitic attack that saw the stabbing of two people in Golders Green today declared a terrorist incident.
Activists have also cautioned against blaming Palestine peace marches for the attack.
Two Jewish men, one aged 76, were injured in London today, after a man was seen running along Golders Green Road armed with a knife.
One witness to the incident described the suspect walking away from the scene as one of the victims bled from his neck.
Head of Counter Terrorism Policing Laurence Taylor confirmed that the stabbing has been formally declared to be terrorism.
Metropolitan Police commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said they arrested the 45-year-old knifeman, who “has a history of violence and mental health issues.”
He said that two police officers who Tasered and arrested him believed he had a bomb when they confronted him.
The two victims, in a stable condition, and the suspect, who was reportedly administered CPR, were taken to hospital.
The Jewish Voice for Liberation (JVL) said in a statement: “It has become scary to be identified as Jews in the Golders Green area — an area in which [JVL co-chairwoman] Jenny Manson lives.
“But importantly, it is a time for serious thought about what is causing this increase in anti-semitic attacks. These are nothing to do with the Palestine peace marches.
“The government, the police and Jewish leaders such as the [Board of Deputies] must think more carefully about what’s going on internationally as well as in the UK.”
The group said blaming human rights movements is “counter-productive,” adding: “It links the UK and its population with Israel’s actions, and it promotes a false identification of all British Jews, regardless of their views on Israel, with those actions.”
Unions also condemned the attack, with RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey saying: “Anti-semitism must be confronted with the same vigour and steely determination as any other form of racism, and our union will always be at the forefront of that fight.
“Jewish people make a tremendous contribution to our country and to our union both now and throughout our history.
“Only by the maximum unity across the whole working class can we drive the scourge of anti-semitism and racism from Britain.”
