BRITAIN’S Communist Party has condemned the latest threats against Cuba and challenged the British government to uphold international law.
At the party’s political committee on Sunday, CPB general secretary Robert Griffiths responded to US President Donald Trump’s announcement that the 64-year-long economic embargo on Cuba would now include all exports of Venezuelan oil to the Caribbean island.
US forces have also hijacked Venezuelan and Russian-flagged oil tankers on the high seas that might have been bound for Cuba.
Reports from the White House indicate that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio would be appointed as a “governor-general” in Cuba.
“Trump and his warmongering criminal cohorts in Washington DC intend to overthrow the Cuban Revolution and restore a puppet dictatorship in Havana, complete with the casinos, brothels and Mafia-type gangs shut down under President Fidel Castro,” Mr Griffiths said.
“Once again, Cuba would be a playground for the American super-rich as the country’s mass education and healthcare systems are dismantled.”
Britain’s communists also condemned US and Israeli threats of military intervention in Iran, where masses of people are in revolt against that country’s leadership.
“As the Gaza genocide demonstrates, Trump and [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu care nothing for human and democratic rights but are determined to control Iran’s oil and mineral resources,” Mr Griffiths told the committee.
The Communist Party called for international solidarity with left, progressive and working-class forces in Iran in the struggle for democratic rights and national sovereignty.
It also attacked the refusal of “a British government headed by shameless hypocrites” to criticise President Trump’s “flagrant breaches” of the UN Charter and international law.
