A CORONER has raised concerns about non-therapeutic male circumcisions being carried out “without any prior training” after a six-month-old boy died days after a procedure.
Mohamed Abdisamad underwent a circumcision on February 12, 2023.
He became unwell three to four days later and was taken by ambulance to Hillingdon Hospital on February 19, where he went into cardiorespiratory arrest and died the same day.
A jury inquest concluded in October 2025 that the cause of death was an “invasive streptococcus pyogenes infection following male circumcision.”
Assistant coroner Anton van Dellen issued a prevention of future deaths report warning that “future deaths could occur unless action is taken.”
He said “any individual may conduct a non-therapeutic male circumcision without any prior training,” with no system of accreditation, registration, record-keeping, infection control or aftercare, and no clear consent process.
The report has been sent to the Department of Health and Social Care and the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, which have 56 days to respond.
