Your Party to back independent candidates

YOUR PARTY will back independent community-based socialists in next year’s local elections in England, the new party’s members have agreed.

In a vote taken at the party’s founding conference at the weekend, and by members online, it decided to support “independent socialist candidates of good standing where there is evidence of candidates being engaged in community campaigning and having the support of their local communities or trade unions branches.”

The vote was by 81.5 per cent to 18.5 on a turnout of over 10,000 of Your Party’s 55,000 members. The party will also stand its own candidates.

Members also endorsed an electoral strategy of targeting seats where the party has a reasonable chance of winning, rather than seeking to stand everywhere.

This will maximise the chances of forming electoral alliances with other forces, above all the Greens, who are currently surging in the polls.

The position in relation to the Scottish and Welsh elections will be determined by the members in each nation in the near future.

A Your Party spokesperson said: “Our party was built off the back of the Independents’ movement, as communities up and down the country turned away from Labour, disgusted at its complicity in genocide and status-quo policies.

“Your Party will build on this success, supporting community independents to take on the Labour machine and win in next year’s local elections, providing a real alternative, unlike the snake oil of Reform.

“From London to Birmingham to Manchester, we will be fighting on an anti-austerity platform. Bring it on.”
