WELSH Labour leader Ken Skates “ought to know better than to play politics” while wildfires continue to rage across the country, Plaid Cymru said today.
Mr Skates told the Morning Star he was disappointed that a summit called for by the Fire Brigades Union to deal with a lack of resources has not taken place and hit out at the government’s failure to act quicker on the crisis.
He said that Labour had urged the Senedd to be recalled from summer recess.
A Plaid Cymru spokesperson said today that ministers had kept the Welsh parliament updated throughout the break, supported requests for military assistance to firefighters and ensured Wales had a voice at Cobra meetings.
They highlighted that Labour did not recall Senedd during previous wildfires, and said Plaid had committed to a multi-agency summit “once the fires have subsided.
“Does Labour seriously expect firefighters and emergency responders to leave the front line to attend a summit while they are still tackling fires?” they said.
“Plaid Cymru is focused on supporting those fighting the fires. Labour is focused on scoring political points.”
