PETER MASON is beguiled by a fascinating account of the importance of cricket to immigrants from the Caribbean to the UK
Warrior
by Donna Irving
Every day at two she stands in Town Hall Square.
Her “Feed Gaza” placard, homemade,
heartfelt.
Blossoms rain down from cherry trees,
or she’s skin soaked,
umbrella exposing its innards.
A child screams in its pushchair.
An old man stares from a bench.
Kids shout insults at themselves.
Later a woman will cry into a washing up bowl.
A man walks past, shouts Cunt,
a missile directed at her.
I watch as it ricochets off
her left shoulder,
turns into a butterfly,
flutters down the street.
Donna Irving is a librarian and poet from Yorkshire. Her debut pamphlet Symmetry of folklore, is published by Yaffle Press.
