Grimsby fans encouraged to boycott food and drink at Hillsborough in solidarity
Hillsborough, home of Sheffield Wednesday

A GRIMSBY fan group is encouraging supporters who attend their League Cup match away to Sheffield Wednesday later this month to show solidarity with home fans by boycotting food and drink at Hillsborough.

The Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Trust has asked home fans to stay away from the game in protest at the club’s owner Dejphon Chansiri.

Grimsby’s reward for beating Manchester United on penalties in round two was a trip to South Yorkshire to face the Owls on September 16, and the Mariners Trust supporters’ group has now been asked for help by their counterparts at Sheffield Wednesday.

“In solidarity with their cause, the travelling Mariners are encouraged to join the boycott by refraining from buying any pints, pies, or other items inside the stadium,” a statement from the Mariners Trust said.

“They would also appreciate it if our fans wore last season’s yellow shirt to show our support for [Wednesday supporters’] black and gold campaign.

“Football clubs belong to their communities and must be protected from poor ownership and management.”

Owls fans are continuing to demand Chansiri sell the cash-strapped club. Various embargoes have been placed on the club for tax debts, late payments to players and staff, while money owed to rival clubs has left them in a perilous financial position.
