RMT must resist the “evil” of racism and “protect the vulnerable amongst us,” delegate Uchenna Ngadi told the transport union’s AGM in Glasgow today.
The Croydon No 1 delegate moved the unanimously backed motion calling on union branches to co-operate with local trades councils and community groups to combat the far right.
“Fascism does not always come wearing jackboots,” he warned.
“Sometimes it wears suits, speaks in soundbites or wraps itself in a flag and calls that patriotism.
“But they always feed on division and racism.
“Racism and fascism are on the rise, fuelled by right-wing media and political rhetoric, exploiting economic hardships.
“Our conference condemns the targeting of minorities and applauds the activists who have confronted these movements.”
In a robust message to Labour ministers, Mr Ngadi said: “We urge them to stop anti-migrant rhetoric, establish safe legal routes [for asylum-seekers] and promote global peace.”
