CND to blockade RAF Lakenheath on final day of peace camp

THE Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) is set to blockade RAF Lakenheath on Saturday against the government covering up plans for US nuclear weapons deployment to Britain.

The blockade will take place from noon on the final day of the Lakenheath Alliance for Peace camp, which has had a continuous presence outside the US air force base in Suffolk since April 14.

CND general secretary Sophie Bolt urged Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to publicly state that US nuclear weapons will not be deployed to Britain.

“[US President Donald] Trump’s reckless ‘America First’ agenda is increasing international tensions every day,” she said.

“Siting US nuclear bombs in Britain will put us on the frontline of any military confrontation.

“The US has poured millions of dollars into upgrading the base in preparation for siting new nuclear bombs. Yet the government refuses to come clean.

“RAF Lakenheath has a history of near nuclear accidents which were covered up for decades.

“Any accidents involving a nuclear weapon would have a devastating environmental and humanitarian impact which no amount of drilling could prepare us for.

“CND is calling on everyone who is concerned about this to join us at the blockade on RAF Lakenheath’s main gate this Saturday.”

Three people were arrested yesterday after 12 women, intersex, non-binary and trans activists, aged 24 to 91, held a topless blockade of the military site’s main gate.

Lucy Porter, a local resident who took part, said: “Women, trans, non-binary, and intersex people are hit hardest by climate change, war and rising fascism.”

Chrissy Jenkins, a carer from Cwmbran who also took part, said: “When so many people are seeing the impact of food insecurity, housing shortages, global warming and the biodiversity crisis, it is an absurdity that everyday working people’s taxes are being spent on the murder of innocents and the further destruction of land which could provide food, housing and space for nature to thrive.”

Tez Burns, 36, from Swansea, added: “I’m joining the Can’t Bare The Harm demonstration because the manufacture and use of weapons leads to increased carbon emissions, making the climate crisis worse and degrading and destroying the lives of those of us who are vulnerable.”
