TEACHERS have vowed to far-right censorship of school libraries after a librarian was forced out of her job over books she stocked in her Salford school.
Her headteacher ordered the removal of nearly 200 books including from Alice Oseman’s Heartstopper and the Twilight series last winter, Index on Censorship reported.
The local NEU rep reportedly told the unnamed librarian that their workplace was on lockdown due to threats from the far-right before she resigned during the safeguarding investigation.
Lowry Academy, part of the United (Churches) Learning Trust chain, denied that they had been “banned” and said they had instead been placed into “age-appropriate categories.”
The National Education Union (NEU) conference heard told of art books being removed “because they have historic paintings and sculptures of nudes” and attempts to remove those by LGBT+ authors on Wednesday.
“Any move to censor books in school libraries based on misinformation and fear mongering should ring alarm bells for all of us,” NEU general secretary Daniel Kebede said.
