BEREAVED families called for a Wales-specific public Covid inquiry today after a Senedd report showed gaps in the UK-wide one.

Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice Cymru called on the Welsh government to stop hiding behind political manoeuvres and deliver the independent Wales Covid inquiry that bereaved families and the people of Wales deserve.

The campaign’s Anna-Louise Marsh-Rees told the Nation.Cymru news website: “The Welsh public must get the answers about what went wrong in Wales.”

Campaigners said the Welsh government claimed that Wales would receive thorough scrutiny within the UK Covid inquiry.

The Wales Covid-19 inquiry Senedd special purpose committee has made nine recommendations following the report from the UK inquiry module one, which will be voted on in the Senedd next week.

A Welsh government spokesperson said: “We are committed to learning lessons from the pandemic and building on the existing foundations to ensure Wales is prepared for future emergencies.

“We will formally respond in the Senedd on April 2.”
