Universals
by Steven Taylor

Israelis were murdered
Palestinians (if there is such a thing)
Lost their lives, like coins
Down the back of the sofa
Or left, inadvertently, on the bartop
After they’d been drinking
And yet insisted on driving
To the hospital to visit their relatives
Who were known to be terrorists
Sir Keir recognises these differences
That’s why he was a lawyer
Specialising in human rights

Steven Taylor was born and raised in Hyde, but now lives in Kilburn, London. He was among the winners of Culture Matters Bread and Roses Competitions in 2021 and 2022. His poetry appeared in the Poetry Business Coal (2024) and in Buzzin Bards poetry anthology the same year.
