SYRIAN rebels claimed that the fragile truce in the country was on its last legs as fighting continued.
Saudi-backed High Negotiations Committee (HNC) envoy and turncoat Syrian army general Assad al-Zoubi told Saudi-owned al-Hadath news that the truce faced “complete nullification” as the government continued to target opposition.
HNC general co-ordinator and former Syrian prime minister Riad Hijab wrote to UN general secretary Ban Ki Moon on Sunday accusing Syria and its Russian allies of violating the cessation of hostilities by attacking groups under its umbrella.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault moved to support the HNC’s position yesterday, calling for a meeting with Mr Ban and UN envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura “without delay.”
Turkey shelled Syrian territory north of Aleppo, claiming to be targeting Islamic State (Isis) rather than Kurdish YPG militias.
But Mr Ban assured that the ceasefire was holding “by and large.”
The moves came as tSyrian psecial forceswrested control of the Aleppo-Khanasser road from Isis following the terrorist army’s attempt to break through to Nusra Front-controlled territory last week.
Syria’s Foreign Ministry condemned renewed calls by Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir for the overthrow of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
The ministry said the Saudi demand violated UN security council resolution 2268 that governs the ceasefire and undermined efforts to end the war.
Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned all nations not to make hasty allegations of ceasefire breaches that might scupper the deal.
